MERCED Project
Real-time and embedded (RT/E) systems are becoming increasingly more complex. To simplify the process from component to system design, component-based development seems a feasible solution.
The underlying idea is to build complex systems by reusing and assembling COTS components. Achieved benefits are time development and cost decrease, productivity increase, component robustness, component quality, etc. The main focus being on reusability of components for the RT/E domain.
Bearing this approach in mind, the goals of the MERCED (Market Enabler for Retargetable COTS Components in Embedded Domain) project are threefold:
Development of market enablers: To define and implement a RT/E component reuse and development environment prototype and a component repository including both domain specific and cross-domain components
Reusability approach for RT/E systems: to address the separation of concern, i.e, minimisation of platform and device dependencies
Definition of a roadmap: from MERCED market enablers to industrial repository for component exchange
The overall project considers the OMG's CORBA component-container model (CCM) as a basis to be adapted for Real-Time and Embedded systems (interaction models, containers, assembly, configuration and deployment, execution infrastructure).
